The Power of Discernment
The capacity to discern right relationships and right decisions is key in these times. Discernment is a necessity in the Kingdom of God and the body of Christ.
Discernment comes from 2 words; the first, nakar meaning is to bring under thorough scrutiny and observation. You want to distinguish correctly between what you desire and what is presented to you as what you desire. The greek meaning is diakrino meaning to thoroughly separate.
Discernment simply means conducting due diligence on whoever or whatever is before you. Discernment has to be done correctly over time. When something is presented to you as ideal, you need to scrutinise it over time.
The Holy Spirit is the spirit of discernment. Jesus is the source of discernment. Walking in discernment starts from the person of Christ and supervised by the Holy Spirit.
To operate in truth, you must realise that there is also a counterfeit. To understand right and wrong, it has to start from the knowledge of Christ. You cannot discern a counterfeit by studying the counterfeit, but by studying the TRUTH. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.
The Holy Spirit only testifies truth.
Truth is a journey that we are guided into daily. If you are grounded in the word, you will discern truth and counterfeit.
Darkness speaks of ignorance. Because God’s word is truth and Christ is His word, it will distinguish between what is truth and what you see.
When a person is prophesying and the spirit is contrary to the word of God, it is not of God. Prophesy should always bring edification, exhortation and comfort.
God’s commandment is not grievous, burdensome. Anything God asks you to do is not burdensome, He always supplies grace for the journey. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of discernment, He will interpret to you based on your understanding and circumstance.
The word of God is quick and powerful.
People are doors and God can use them to elevate you, likewise, the enemy can also send counterfeit relationships to derail you.
If Lot had discerned correctly, he would have left Sodom and Gomorrah, he refused to leave the land because of his love for wealth, relationships and choices.
Where there is no discernment there will always be deception. You must always bring things to be judged by the word of God. Every move of the spirit requires the right response. The response of the spirit is not generic but responsive. You must discern correctly to respond appropriately.
Case study – 1 Sam 3:1-9
The presence of God is for us to abide in. When you are in close proximity to the presence of God, you will hear Him clearly and correctly. For every move of the spirit there is the right response. When you don’t discern correctly, you will miss Kairos moments.
The Holy Spirit gives a word of direction first, the best thing a prophet should do is confirm that which the spirit of God has already said to you.
Discernment is about recognising, referencing and responding to what God is doing in your life correctly and appropriately.
